How do I care for my Hannah Z Jewelry? The following Care Guide applies to all Hannah Z pieces created from 2023 forward. If you own a piece created prior to this time, please contact me for help. Thank you! STORAGE. Every Hannah Z piece comes in a box that can be used for storage. Enclosed in that box you will find a small plastic baggie along with a small black, anti-tarnishing strip. Your anti-tarnishing strip will remain active for up to two years. I encourage you to store pieces in their baggies in order to reduce natural tarnishing, protect your metal from scratches and prevent fiber designs from getting snagged. AVOID storing pieces in high moisture areas even if stored in baggie. BEAUTY FIRST. Apply your makeup, perfume, hair products (hairspray, etc) before putting on your jewelry. CLEAN HANDS. Skin care lotions, oils, sweat, etc. could stain the fibers and encourage metal tarnishing. WATER. A bit of water will not harm your fiber piece, but please remove your jewelry before swimming or showering. FIBER CLEANING. Fiber pieces can be very gently cleaned, only as needed, with a q-tip and mild dish soap. USE CAUTION. Dab lightly but do not rub since this will cause the thread to fray. Dry metal thoroughly to prevent spotting. METAL CLEANING. Here are several suggestions for cleaning your brass and sterling silver pieces! Silver/Brass Polishing Cloth. These cloths are 100% cotton flannel cloth and thoroughly impregnated with cleaning and polishing agents formulated for brass or silver. This is the safest method for pieces that hold fiber designs! 1 tbsp Lemon Juice + 4 tbsp Baking Soda. Mix to create paste. Gently scrub the brass, rinse and dry thoroughly. Brasso Brass Cleaner. Following instructions on bottle. Please use in a well ventilated area. My favorite method for brass only pieces uses Steel Wool Grade-00. Tear off a piece of steel wool, add water and a small amount of household soap. Gently buff your pieces until you reveal a beautiful, bright golden finish. Rinse and dry thoroughly. NOTE: DO NOT use abrasives on 14k Gold-filled ear wires. Please clean with soap and water only. METAL POLISH/PROTECT. Before shipment, each Hannah Z piece is polished with Renaissance Wax. This will help slow tarnishing and protect pieces from fingerprints and water spots. It's an excellent protectant for many things if you'd like to keep a can around! NEED HELP? I'm happy to help! You cover the shipping cost and I'll take care of the cleaning! Contact me at hannahzjewelry@gmail.com for shipping information. REACH OUT ANYTIME! If you encounter any care concerns with your piece, please feel free to contact me. I’m happy to try and brainstorm a solution :)

How do I prevent my jewelry from tarnishing? All Hannah Z brass components are made from raw, untreated brass and will oxidize over time resulting in a surface tarnish or patina. The speed in which an item tarnishes will depend on how it is stored and cared for. Although tarnished brass can be very beautiful, some may prefer the bright golden hue of freshly polished brass. Here are some tips! STORAGE. Every Hannah Z piece comes in a box that can be used for storage. Will your brass designs turn my skin green? It depends on a few factors! BRASS BASICS. Brass is composed of Copper and Zinc. When copper oxidizes it produces a green patina (or tarnish). You have likely seen this on old pennies! This process is not a speedy one, but it can be accelerated when mixing with your unique body chemistry. YOUR SKIN PH. People with an acidic skin ph are more likely to notice accelerated oxidation. The acidity in their sweat chemically reacts to the copper and releases copper chloride, which in turn, produces green discoloration on the skin. The green coloring is not toxic or dangerous in any way! A little soap and water will wash it right off! TYPE OF JEWELRY. Pieces most likely to leave this green discoloration are pieces that closely touch the skin for a period of time, such as rings or stud earrings. Dangling earrings and even loose bangle or cuff bracelets are much less likely to produce this effect since they are not in constant, close contact with the skin. PREVENTION. The easiest way to prevent "green skin" is to keep your pieces clean and avoid wearing pieces that touch your skin closely while sweating. Another helpful tip for items such as rings or stud earrings is to seal the areas that come in contact with your skin. Applying a coat of clear nail polish or a protectant wax such a Renaissance Wax can provide a barrier between your skin and the brass. If you have any further question or concerns on the topic, please feel free to contact me!

Are your earrings hypoallergenic?Yes, all of the metals that touch skin are hypoallergenic! I am very sensitive myself, so I test out all materials before I use them :) Please be mindful however, that “hypoallergenic“ simply means that the metal is less likely to cause an allergy. If you find that you are having a reaction to your earrings, please contact me and I'm happy to see how I can help. In some cases, it may be as simple as switching the ear wire.

What metals are used in your jewelry?Beginning in 2023, all of my metal designs and fiber settings are handcrafted using raw brass and sterling silver. My ear wires and posts are created using 14k Gold-filled or Sterling Silver wire. Stud earring posts are Sterling Silver. For designs purchased prior to 2023, most settings were gold- or silver-plated brass or stainless steel. Ear wires were 14k Gold-filled and posts were Stainless Steel or Sterling Silver.
